China’s Muyuan Foods has started construction of its first independently controlled pig production project in Vietnam, expanding its presence beyond its existing cooperation with local producer BAF.

The project in Gia Lai province is designed for 16,200 sows and 209,000 finishing pigs per batch, with 2.17 production batches per year.

The farm covers more than 106 ha and consists of two production areas. Pờ Tó 1 will house 6,600 sows and 85,000 finishing pigs per batch, while Pờ Tó 2 will have capacity for 9,600 sows and 124,000 finishing pigs per batch.

Muyuan is also building a feedmill with annual production capacity of 360,000 tonnes. The pig farm and feedmill are scheduled to begin commercial operations in the first quarter of 2028.

Total investment in the two projects is about USD 140 million, including around USD 120 million for the pig farm and USD 20 million for the feedmill.

Construction began on October 11 through Thịnh Phát-Muyuan Gia Lai, a project company 99% owned by Muyuan Vietnam.

The project marks a further development in Muyuan’s expansion in Vietnam. The Chinese pig producer had previously entered a strategic partnership with BAF Vietnam, covering pig production technology and the development of large-scale farms.

The two companies later established cooperation on a high-rise pig farming project in Tay Ninh province.

Muyuan has identified Vietnam as a strategic destination for its expansion in Southeast Asia. The Gia Lai investment extends that strategy with a pig production project under Muyuan’s own control.
